JAZZ AND POETRY FESTIVAL IS A FIRST
FOR PHILLY
Three-day Event Celebrates The City’s Jazz Heritage
PHILADELPHIA, September 2, 2003 – Philly’s about to jazz things up with the first annual Philadelphia Jazz and Poetry Festival taking place throughout the city from September 12-14, 2003. Performing during the festival are Donald Byrd and Bud Shank along with Philly’s own Sonny Fortune, Khan Jamal, Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble and Gerald Veasley. In addition to an interactive Youth Jazz Workshop at the Free Library of Philadelphia, the three-day event features the Po/Jazz Connection, an intermingling of spoken word and jazz, at LOVE Park; a Philly Jazz Party at the Loews Hotel; and performances at more than a dozen venues throughout the city, including Chris’s Jazz Café, Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus and the Sedgwick Cultural Center.
Philadelphia is home to many great jazz musicians and poets. More than 180 representatives of the city’s thriving jazz community were photographed in a grand photo entitled “Philly Jazz Reunion” at the Philadelphia Jazz and Poetry Festival press conference and this photo will be released during the event.
