Philly’s More Fun When You Stay Up Late

This summer, visitors to the region are invited to see for themselves why Philly’s More Fun When You Stay Up Late. With the new Philly Triple Night Hotel Package, developed by the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) and the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association (GPHA), visitors can check into their favorite hotel any Thursday or Friday from June 27 through September 8, stay two nights and receive the third night free. The Philly Triple Night Hotel Package, available at more than 40 hotels throughout the city and region, also includes a fun gift upon check-in and a Stay-Up-Late Guide with information about what to do after the sun sets. Rates for the three-night hotel package start at $168. Incredible Stay-Up-Late Rates are also available at most hotels for one-night stays. In addition to an eclectic selection of restaurants and nightclubs, the city is host to plenty of special events and cultural happenings that will keep night owls entertained all evening long. Here’s just a sampling:

Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts Hosts Festive Summer Programming

The Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, a $265 million, glass-enclosed performing arts facility on the Avenue of the Arts, kicks off its summer season on June 21 with an all-night Summer Solstice Celebration. The 12-hour event features a variety of musical performances, poetry readings, storytelling, dancing and more. The Center’s summer programming continues with themed weekend festivals on weekends in July and Wednesday Night Dance Parties throughout July and August.

Go Up, Up and Away at the Philadelphia Zoo This Summer

A major new attraction will float into the Philadelphia Zoo just in time for the summer season. The Channel 6 Zooballoon, a tethered, helium-filled balloon, is one of only three such rides in the country. Guests on the region’s only passenger-carrying balloon will be treated to a spectacular view of the zoo, as and the city skyline. Zooballoon is airborne June-November. Bloomsday is the Rosenbach Museum & Library’s annual holiday celebrating James Joyce’s Ulysses, a manuscript that holds a treasured place in their collection. The central event takes place on June 16 with a public reading of the book, in honor of the day the novel’s hero walked through Dublin. Exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) showcases the work of 19th-century American landscape painters. The Redevelopment of the Country’s Most Historic Square Mile Continues

The $38 million Independence Visitor Center, located on Independence Mall, opened in November 2001 to orient visitors to Independence National Historical Park (INHP), the City of Philadelphia and the region. In late summer, 2002, a new sculpture will be unveiled on the building’s south wall that depicts a most unusual view of the Declaration of Independence – words pertaining to slavery that were drafted but cut from the document will be shown once again, but filled in with crushed glass. The Liberty Bell, the nation’s most beloved symbol of freedom, is getting a new home. Work on the $12.4 million facility is expected to be complete in March 2003. The Center will be built along 6th Street between Chestnut & Market Streets. The $185 million National Constitution Center, a stirring interactive museum and the first dedicated to honor and perpetuate the ideas embodied in the U.S. Constitution, is scheduled to open on July 4, 2003. Its goal is to increase understanding of the relevance of one of the greatest documents ever written.
