GTPMC ANNOUNCES CULTURAL COOPERATIVE GRANTS

Awards Based on Tourism Potential

PHILADELPHIA, December 4, 2000 -- Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) today announced marketing grant awards totaling $467,500 to 24 cultural and other organizations in the region whose projects promise to enhance Philadelphia’s tourism image and offering for tourists.

The tourism-building grants, overseen by GPTMC’s Cultural Cooperative Grant Program, have been awarded in five separate categories: blockbuster and mini-blockbuster projects, itinerary-based projects, niche projects, cultural district marketing, and planning.

"The grant awards are earmarked for advertising and promotion outside the region," said Meryl Levitz, president and CEO of GPTMC. "The awards extend the reach of the individual attractions while building the identification of the region as a whole."

Since 1997, GPTMC has awarded 100 marketing grants totaling $2.5 million, which has been leveraged to generate an additional $3.5 million in advertising.

GPTMC grant recipients with exhibitions/shows currently or recently up and running include the following: Van Gogh: Face to Face at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA); Philadelphia Orchestra’s cultural weekend package with area hotels and PMA; The Barnes Foundation hotel package; Prince Music Theatre’s production of 3hree in partnership with several center city hotels; and the first brochure of the Parkway First Marketing Council, a collaboration of cultural institutions along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation is a non-profit organization dedicated to generating awareness of and visitation to Philadelphia and Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties. For more information about travel Philadelphia, visit www.gophila.com or call (888) GO-PHILA.
