Evening Lecture
In the Steps of Marco Polo: Excavations at Medieval Kinet, A Mediterranean Port Town
Dr. Scott Redford, Professor, Georgetown University, and Director of The McGhee Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies in Alanya, Turkey, speaks. Since 1992, Prof. Marie-Henriette Gates of Bilkent University has been excavating at the site of Kinet Hoyuk in southern Turkey. The last settlement level at Kinet dates to the late thirteenth century, the time at the end of the Crusades when Marco Polo disembarked at nearby Ayas to begin his history-making trip to China and back. Dr. Redford will discuss conditions in the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean that made it a center of international commerce at that time. Reception follows. $10; $8 members. Children’s Workshop
Walk Like An Egyptian
In this "Anthropologists in the Making" program, children ages 8 through 12 learn about traditional Egyptian music, dance and personal adornment. Scholar and dancer Habiba joins in, as participants create their own Egyptian festival. $5 materials fee. Pre-registration required: 215/898-4015.

Family Program
An Ancient Egyptian Afternoon
More than half a million people across America visited UPM’s extraordinary exhibition "Searching for Ancient Egypt: Art, Architecture and Artifacts" as it traveled to six cities over three years. With the end of the exhibition tour, several of the Museum’s most beloved ancient Egyptian objects, from a gilded mummy mask to an elegant a cast bronze statue of a cat, are back on display in the Egyptian galleries. While celebrating their homecoming at this special family afternoon, guests may have their names written in Egyptian hieroglyphs, enjoy crafts for the kids, participate in a dance performance and workshop, take a gallery tour, and hear a special lecture by Dr. David Silverman, Curator of the Egyptian Section. Peace Around the World
With its mission to increase understanding of world history and cultural diversity, the Museum is in a unique position to offer a holiday-time event that celebrates individual and group hopes and aspirations for a world at peace. This free family day of fun features international entertainment with a focus on children and the holidays. Choirs, games, face painting, and holiday craft workshops for all ages help ring in the season at this special afternoon sponsored by the Museum’s Volunteer Board/Women’s Committee. Native Americans as the First Ecologists
Children ages 8 to 12 are invited to explore how American Indians have used gifts from nature, in this "Anthropologists in the Making" program. In a craft workshop, children use a gourd and paints to make their own decorated bowls and ladles. $5 materials fee. Pre-registration required: 215/898-4015.

The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is dedicated to the study and understanding of human history and diversity.
