African American Cultural History
Philadelphia, PA (July 27, 2000) – The African American Cultural Extravaganza returns to Penn’s Landing on Saturday, August 26, and Sunday, August 27, 2000. From Noon until 8 p.m. each day, performers reflecting the African Diaspora will present a wide range of entertainment.
The African American Cultural Extravaganza is a family event free to the public. It will feature a multitude of events and artistic performances throughout its weekend run. Musical acts celebrating the African musical traditions of reggae, jazz and gospel include jazz singer Stephanie Renee, Salima Omar’s Jazz Band, and the Kulu Mele African Dance and Drum Ensemble.
Marketplace vendors along Penn’s Landing will sell traditional African, African American, and Caribbean cuisine for those wishing to indulge in authentically prepared meals. Activities for children include face-painting, African American magicians, and arts and crafts. Health enthusiasts can peruse the Holistic Health Center, featuring massages, Reiki, aromatherapy, reflexology and other natural health and healing practices. POWER 99 FM Radio and WYBE TV will be on site, as well as non-profit exhibitors and community organizations providing information about their services.
Those interested in a more artistic reflection of African culture can enjoy an African Fashion Show and drill team and dance performances. Camden’s own Universal Creative Art & Dance Ensemble will also be featured at the Extravaganza.

The Extravaganza is one of many events taking place at Penn’s Landing this summer and is part of its summer season of festivals, concerts and events.
