KENNETT SQUARE, PA -- Autumns Colors paint the landscape October 2-20 at Longwood Gardens near Kennett Square, PA, with a special Senior Day planned for October 10. Glowing shades of yellow, orange, purple, and red illuminate the trees and flower gardens throughout the 1,050-acre horticultural showplace created by industrialist Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954). Gardening demonstrations, flower shows, organ concerts, and other daily programs add to the Gardens fall charms.
Longwood invites older adults to visit on Tuesday, October 10, for Senior Day. All activities (except meals) are included in the regular Tuesday adult admission of $8. The days schedule offers hands-on garden crafts and short talks on subjects ranging from gardening on a budget to autumn flower arrangements. Seniors can also enjoy rare behind-the-scenes tours of the Open Air Theatre and 10,010-pipe organ. Organist Don Kinnier and soprano Judy Townsend perform several times throughout the day. The Terrace Restaurant joins the festivities with a special Senior Day menu.
October is an excellent time to see the Longwood Heritage Exhibit. Located in the historic Peirce-du-Pont House surrounded by centuries-old trees, the Exhibit traces Longwoods 300-year evolution through old photos, home movies, video, and artifacts. The exhibit is open daily and is included with admission.
The outdoor gardens and Conservatory open daily at 9 am and 10 am, respectively, and both close at 6 pm. The picnic grove a short drive from the parking lot is open during garden hours. The Terrace Restaurant is open daily for full and self-service dining. The Gardens Shop is also open daily. Admission is $12 for adults ($8 on Tuesdays), $6 for youths ages 16-20, $2 for children ages 6-15, and free for children under age 6.
