Philadelphia (July 11, 2000)— On view through August 6, 2000 is In Celebration of the Republican National Convention: Great American Documents, a special exhibition in the parlor of the Rosenbach Museum & Library.

In 1936 Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach, the legendary Philadelphia collector, presented an exhibition titled "The Republican Party – its History recorded by Original Documents" in celebration of the Republican National Convention. One of the world’s great collections of literary and historical documents, the Rosenbach Museum is once again exhibiting notable examples to welcome the GOP back to Philadelphia this summer.

The exhibition includes Lincoln’s manuscript note on the formation of the Republican Party (1857) and a manuscript excerpt from his "House Divided" speech (1860). Also on view is a journal describing the first known raising of the American flag in battle (1777) and a congressional document proposing the 13th Amendment, which later abolished slavery.

The museum holds over one hundred documents by Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, as well as important historical documents pertaining to every one of the fifty states including:
